The Shinmonzen

Located on Shinmonzen Street—renowned for its fine antiques—and quietly nestled beside the gently flowing waters of the Shirakawa River in Gion, The Shinmonzen is a refined luxury boutique hotel.
Envisioned by Tadao Ando—one of the world’s most celebrated contemporary architects—together with his circle of artist friends, The Shinmonzen was designed with deep reverence for Kyoto’s traditions and cultural heritage, thoughtfully reimagined for the modern traveler.

Architect Tadao Ando “This elegant hotel stands along the Shirakawa River on Shinmonzen Street in Gion, Kyoto.
The intention was to create a space that faithfully respects Kyoto’s traditions, while responding to contemporary lifestyles. It is a fusion of history, the present, and the future.
While expressing the unique character of Kyoto as a place, the design also creates a world open to the global community.
Each room is designed so that guests may enjoy the gentle flow and shimmering beauty of the Shirakawa, regarded as one of Kyoto’s most beautiful waterways.
It is my hope that those who visit and spend time here will discover a new and deeper allure of Kyoto.”
