Late Summer Greetings

As your Japan travel consultant, we are sending you humble late summer wishes.

In Japan, we have finished "Tsuyu," wet season with one month and a half of continuous heavy rain.

We often receive inquiries on when would be the best time to travel to Japan.

Many remarks on how the cherry blossom season is the most popular and special time of the year, and on the contrary, June to early July is considered as a season best to avoid due to rainy weather limiting traveler’s activity.

After the wet season comes to an end, Japan enters a very hot and humid summer, which can peak to 40 degrees Celsius/104 degrees Fahrenheit, which makes July and August a fairly unpopular season to travel along with June’s rainy season.

But today, we would like to give an argument on how Japan can be equally charming during this unpopular rainy season and burning summer season.

・Rainy Season Pros ? Hydrangeas are in full bloom, stunningly seen everywhere across Japan.

・Rainy Season Pros ? Rainy days can make photos into a beautiful art piece.

・Summer Season Pros ? The most festive season of the year with firework events and local festivals held nationwide.

・Summer Season Pros ? Your are able to encounter distinct summer cultural rituals such as “Kawadoko,”“Yukata,” “Nagashi Somen,” and “Kakigori” Kawadoko - a dining concept which involves eating next to or on top of flowing river in order to feel the cool breeze while eating

Yukata - a traditional summer wardrobe that still exists today, in present times mainly worn at fireworks events and regional summer festivals Nagashi Somen - a summer tradition mainly eaten when families and friends gather. Somen noodles run through the half split bamboo cylinder with water flowing through the bamboo gutter. People enjoy the excitement of catching the slippery noodles running past them with their chopsticks. Once caught, dip the noodle into a cool broth, and bon appetit.

Kakigori -shaved ice commonly eaten during hot summer days. While casual ones are eaten at home and summer festival food stands topping with traditional artificial flavored syrups, upscales ones have been trending over the years with shops that specialize in Kakigori all year create one of a kind dish with naturally made nutritious syrup. The way they shave the ice is also special, and some consider them as Kakigori artisans.

・Rainy Season and Summer Season Pros ? There are quite a lot of indoor facilities and activities you are able to enjoy regardless of the weather, such as Digital Art Museum by TeamLab, and morning visitation to the sumo stable.

TeamLab Borderless Digital Art Museum, recently trending, one of the most popular indoor facilities in Tokyo Sumo Stables are not always open to the public, but at times are open for public viewing of their morning practice and training

・Rainy Season and Summer Season Pros ? Compared to other travel seasons, it can be a good time to travel if you are not fan of crowds (caution: Japan’s Obon season around August 10 to 15, is a public holiday so while it is not crowded with foreign travelers, many places can be crowded with domestic travelers.
